ENGLIFISH!

Well ya! I was aspiring to become an engineer when I was going to complete school. I wrote my entrance exam and got back home crying for I knew my Mathematics part of it went so horrible. I told my mother "Amma your daughter will never be an engineer. Her dream is all shattered". In the mean while I started thinking if I should become a journalist ( yeah!! Thanks to Barkha Dutt) . But then I did not know if I had so much talent to write articles, make hi-fi statements blah blah... That's not me!!

OK! Why am I writing about all these things? I sometimes feel English as such has been ruined these days. I don't deny the fact that I have also contributed to it. I honestly must agree that even the Shakespeare English was Greek and Latin to me. I can't understand a bit of his English which is like highly complicated.

After by hearting around 4000 words for my GRE, ask me how many words I currently remember. Should be around 2K!! ( buggy is feeling sad)

One of my buddy asks me "do you know what is astigmatism". Well, I think "aaaah Buggy I know it is something related to the eye". The bulb in my brain tries to glow!! (sorry ba!! fuse poirthu)
So instead of just adjusting, I directly ask him what it means and he explains it.

A few months back my brother asked me "What does honing mean"? Yes!! I know what it means... I can remember how I mug adichufied "Honing sounds like coning... the cone is sharp.. so honing refers to something sharp" . So what's it all about? Most people whom I've spoken to have said that words get registered in your mind only if you use it and some say you need to READ newspapers. tch tch tch!! All that I do is check out the movie details or the tuyara sambavam section( obituary column) to approximately check how many years has a person lived. :D This is what READING the newspaper literally means in buggy's terminology.

Moving on to what I wish to discuss next.Some how the local languages such as tamil, malayalam seem to have an influence on english. Words like Peetify, altify, vaangify( in general the "fy" language) seem to be very popular.
Also the "Ok va!! Like that ah!!" kind of usage makes me a little uncomfortable. Worse is the effect of malayalam in english. The alphabets "P" and "O" have vanished out of the dictionary.
"ComBlan kudichutu.. ComBlain pannitu...SOOOOCKS maatindu LOOOOORY otinom" (CLEARLY NO OFFENSE/NAKKALS MEANT). On the whole... English mela bull dozer ootardu. :P

Aha!! How could I leave the typical American style of English?? You forget to add "u" in words like Colour, Flavour, Favourite and that becomes your "American English" !! You swallow a few alphabets from English and change the pronunciation, it becomes french!! :D

At times I feel that English is one of the most funniest and yet the best language to communicate. I am nothing at all in this vast ocean of words. :)

signing off,

Buggy :)

@arun

thank you :) But there is nothing against the influence of malayalam on english. Just that I was trying to explain how a globally spoken language is modified according to the local language
